Chapter 9: Coin

Ítalo “Coin” Rezende
Insomniac since 2009
He closed every account but the one that closed him.

A man who believes in the perfect sign — the number that means exactly what it says. Numbers never lie. And then one line refuses him: a debt with no debtor, a sum that comes out different every time he counts it. The signifier floats loose. His insomnia is only his refusal to close the book.

Money died. The debt didn’t. So I keep the book — a night of watch, a dressed wound, a life pulled back from the edge. I never lose the sum.

But there’s one line that won’t close. It leaks out of a sleeping man’s mouth in figures I can’t balance, and every time I count it the total has changed. I’ve closed every book in this place. Every one. Except hers.

Numbers never lie. Numbers always collect. I’m still waiting to collect this one — or for it to collect me.

So says the Code.
