Chapter 8: Grandma
Rita “GRANDMA” Leal
Insomniac since 2001
She’s the reason there’s an after at all.
—
I don’t remember her face. I remember her hands.
I came back wrong. Cold in a way the weather couldn’t explain. The room kept talking—beans on the coil, smoke. I slid down the wall. The dog saw. The dog always sees first.
Then she was there. She didn’t ask my name—good, I don’t have one anymore. She opened the jacket, read what was leaking out of me, and got to work.
Half-Light said: She spat, you stay.
That’s the whole sermon. No words. Just permission to keep breathing.
She doesn’t talk. She just makes sure you do.
So says the Code.
